Interview with Kathy Caldwell, Director of Senior Services
K: Ok, why is this picture there? Who is that?
I: That's a stock photo. You wouldn't agree to get your photo taken, remember?
K: Oh. Right. Well, I like it anyway, I think it nicely sums up what we do. Anyway, carry on with the interview!
I: Can you give a little bit of your background?
K: Sure, I've worked in health care for 40 years, the past 30 of those have been directly working with seniors. I have worked in extended care units in hospitals, I have been the clinical director of a care home, and I owned and operated a seniors care home for 15 years.
I: What makes you so passionate about your work now?
K: I think aging and dementia are so misunderstood. I think that misunderstanding can bring fear and exhaustion for the families, and for the person suffering directly from dementia. I want people to know that there are so many viable options and solutions to improve quality of life and approach dementia with dignity and care. I am also passionate about helping families see that there are so many ways that they can make it easier on themselves and so many ways that they can be happier and less exhausted.
I: If you could wave a magic wand, what would you change about the field?
K: It would be to be able to give staff in the field and families a true sense of what their loved one is going through.
I: What other interests do you have?
K: I like mystery novels and bald cats. I have a sphynx named Charlie who is my constant companion!
